Introducing Elizabeth Johns

Interests
My main academic interests involve accounting, where I plan on eventually becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and working on the tax side of accounting. Outside of accounting, I like to read and write, which is why I am also pursuing a minor in English. In particular, I really enjoy Shakespeare and I am taking my third Shakespeare class this semester. My favorite plays of his are Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet.
When I am not studying accounting, I have a personal interest in using my creativity to create complex projects. Specifically, I love the idea of seeing the culmination of hours and hours of hard work coming together into a finished project. Because of this, one of my favorite hobbies is crocheting. I especially love to crochet plushies of all sorts of animals and critters without a pattern, which forces me to use all the techniques and stitches I have learned to create something entirely new, unique, and personal. While there is a downside to this approach to crocheting where I never know how to recreate the project if it ends up good, I firmly believe this absence of the instructions is half the fun for next time.

Expectations
Although I have some experience with the tools of the Makerspace, namely the power tools of the woodshop and the laser cutter, I am certainly no expert in how to use them to their full potential. As a result, I want to learn more about everything the Makerspace has to offer so I have more options when it comes to creating projects and expressing my creativity.

I am particularly interested in learning how to use 3D printers because I have seen many people talk about its potential to both create little knickknacks and problem-solve minor everyday inconveniences. I believe that the versatility and potential of 3D printers make them a tool that everyone should learn to use.
From my time as an architecture major I have realized that the friendships forged in workshop environments are always so vastly different than connections formed anywhere else. I honestly miss meeting people through a shared interest in creativity. As a result, I want to take advantage of the opportunity this class offers to meet new people outside of my major and make friends with other like-minded and creative individuals.
I look forward to learning about the Makerspace and getting to know everyone this semester!
