Introduction: Shumyla Lopez
My name is Shumyla Lopez, I am a senior psychology major - I began my journey at Trinity August 2022.
This is an image of me getting ready to eat my very first pazookie (which is crazy! The dubai chocolate was good though).
Interests
I am from Stevenspoint, Wisconsin, but I more often say that Weslaco, Texas is my home as I lived there most of my life. I moved down there in 2010, so a lot of my childhood memories remain in the valley.
My academic interests has been psychology since I arrived at Trinity. I am hoping to one day attend graduate school and achieve my dream of becoming a clinical psychologist. I am a research assistant for Dr. Carolyn Becker, where much of my research focus has been related to eating disorders and food insecurity in older women. Some of the ongoing projects that I am co-leading involves a project called Life Hacks. Our current aim is to target subclinical anxiety and depression in college students by teaching cognitive-behavioral skills in the form of a workshop. These workshops are super fun and interactive (totally not advertising in any way shape or form, haha), but if you are interested feel free to reach out! I really enjoy my work as a research assistant, especially when it comes to leading the workshops.
Outside of school, my interests lie in painting, drawing, and playing video games. I really like illustrating anatomical figures in various poses with silly faces (Brian Griffin, Snoopy, etc).
Ape Escape academy is a very old game that I play, but since my PSP broke I downloaded an emulator onto my laptop and play every night! Not many people really know what game that is though. Overcooked is another guilty pleasure of mine, especially when playing with friends that are forced to pair up and share a controller (it gets nasty very fast).
Speaking of which, I also love to cook! My favorite kinds of dishes to make are butter chicken and garlic naan, chicken tinga, and spicy mole. A lot of the dishes I make are made using online recipes, but when it comes to mexican food, my mother has taught me everything.
Expectations
I hope to learn how to operate many of the machines availible in the makerspace. Since freshman year, I have been waiting to join this class and many of my friends had taken this course and made really amazing things. I believe that the skills I will learn in the makerspace will be good to use in other contexts such as repairs, gift making, etc. I am most excited to use the 3D printer, I already began to look at the thingiverse website and found the perfect test project.

Some other things that I am hoping to learn is engraving various materials such as wood, acrylic, and maybe even glass! Well, I am not sure about hand engraving metal ( I mean I would love to but unsure if that is possible in the makerspace), but a goal of mine is to make small metal earrings, or rings!
