Luke Schiesser Project 4: Desktop CNC

Process      I knew from the start that I wanted to make something related to my hobby of modeling. What exactly I wanted to make, however, was much harder to decide on. I played around with the Hawaiian Islands, segments of the Grand Canyon, and even the shoreline of British Columbia that my brother and I kyaked around for a month. I eventually settled on a river by my house in Austin, which was pretty simple but still topographical.      Once I had the terrain I wanted, I sliced it in Fusion to fit onto a 120mm x 92mm oval Warhammer base. This would be for a plane with a transparent plastic stand. As one of my larger models and the first one I ever bought, I wanted to give it something extra and put some extra work into it. I tapered the edges to match the slope of the base and cut out a cross shape for the transparent stand to fit through. Ryan walked me through using the CNC machine, and though it took some time to cut, there were no major problems....

Luke Schiesser Proposal: Mixed Techniques

Proposal Statement: My hobby station is a perpetual mess, so I want to make a setup to organize the chaos. This will include a paint rack, a tool storage, a brush holder, a work tray, and bins and drawers for miscellanious supplies.  I'm drawing inspiration from examples online such as these Advise: I asked my classmates for feedback: "That'd be sick as hell" -Shumulya Ryan advised that I use the 1/4 in. plywood as it is the most sturdy material that we can lasercut.  Rough Game Plays: For precision and ease of manufacture, I plan to lasercut the majority of this project. I would like the pieces to be seperate (or at least detachable) to allow me to customise my setup and adjust to future workspaces as needed.  My rough ideas for the sections are: Paint rack Brush holder Tool organizer (stretch goal) Work tray (stretch goal) I want to at least make the paint rack and brush holder, I already have an airbrush and painting station, so these parts will go alongside it. Ma...

Elizabeth Johns Proposal: Mixed Techniques

Proposal Statement     For this project, I plan on creating a small desk clock using the CNC machine, 3D printer, and laser cutter. I plan on using a clock component kit I got from Josh to allow the mechanisms of the clock to operate while using the tools in the makerspace to make the clockface and stand.    Advice For this project, I consulted with the ever-amazing Shumyla Ló pez. When discussing my project with her, she advised that I use multiple pieces of wood to keep the clock mechanism in place. I was already toying with this idea in my head, especially because I had originally talked about this idea with Ryan for Project 4, and they had recommended a similar solution. The biggest concern that most of my peers and I have shared is that the mechanism of the clock will be too thick for the CNC machine to cut out while also keeping the structural integrity of the piece. This concern is the primary reason I decided to use this project idea for Projec...

Proposal Statement: I plan to make a game board/box that can store pieces inside it. I'm hoping to create a chess board using the CNC router and laser cutter as the primary game board by routing a base and then embedding acrylic pieces as the tiles. I will create the base and "container" part of the box using power tools to make it more sturdy and durable. For the game pieces, I am going to use the 3D printer and STL files of characters.   First sketch Advise: I have discussed my ideas for this final project with Elizabeth, Shumyla, and Luke to work on brainstorming options. We discussed potential games that I could set up as game boards for my piece as well as how to handle storage for the game pieces. During the discussion, I shifted from my original idea of creating drawers in the base to creating more of a box that uses the game board as a lid. I also discussed my plan with Dr. T after I drew my sketches to make sure that the design would be feasible and appropriate...

Shumyla Lopez Proposal: Mixed Techniques

Shumyla Lopez Proposal: Mixed Techniques  Proposal Statement  I plan to make a pair of engraved earrings with a 3D printed or wood carved frame as a jewelry holder. For the earrings, I have a a pair of fishhooks I have not used and would like to repupose them, so I figure out whether the mental engraving tool as able to etch a design into the flat plate of the hook. I will list an example below to show a better idea of what the hooks would look like: With the metal plates I am hoping to engrave a caliber style design. However, the metal plates that I have from the fishooks are curved, which may be more difficult to etch on the surface. I may have to problem solve this with Josh if he is availible, but that is the idea for the earrings.  Regarding the frame, I would take an STL file of a baroque style design to have a small frame printed. However if this is not possible I will build a frame by hand, using the dremel tool to carve out the designs of the frame. Advise:...

Process:  This project involved designing a piece on the CNC Router that would fit in a 6x6x3/4 inch area. I really struggled with this project throughout the brainstorming process as most of my original ideas either would not fit within the size constraints or involved details that were too small for the CNC Router to carve out. At the start of this process, I had decided I wanted to use topography that had some kind of personal meaning or history for me; however, this made finding an appropriate location to use the Terrain2STL tool on very difficult as most of the locations I have a strong connection to are incredibly flat. As such, I explored external tools such as CADMAPPER and SketchUp to try and create a model that would include a topographical map with buildings. This produced some interesting designs including one of Trinity and one of my dad's hometown in England. I also attempted designs of two football stadiums in England as I wanted to produce this piece as a gif...

Shumyla Lopez Blog Post  Process: In the initial stages of this project, brainstorming was challenging. I decided to make a water ripple incense holder. I initially made a jewelry holder that used topographical designs of mountains; the original design had many holes and errors, so I decided to change the design completely. After refining the design, I experienced much difficulty in editing the mesh and rescaling the model to fit the size of the criteria of the assignments. Moreover, once I had finished the design, I uploaded the code file to the CNC machine, where Ryan noticed that there were a few errors in the scale and tool path, which he guided me in correcting the issue. Result: Overall, in the creation process, I had initially created a tool path that was not circular; however, Ryan corrected me on that! I had a lot of attempts at changing the design, and the quality of the rendering had made my computer crash multiple times. I was able to reduce the complexity of the ...

Process For this project, we were instructed to import a topographic map into Fusion 360 and use part of the topography to create a design that would be carved out on the CNC machine. Going into this project, I struggled with coming up with a concept that I would even want to make. The constraints of this project forced the size of the project to be 6” x 6” x ¾”, making it incredibly difficult to come up with a project that would fit inside this space and have an interesting design and function. After much brainstorming and looking at other wooden CNC projects online, I settled on creating a small jewelry tray because I recently had gotten my ears pierced for the first time and wanted something small to hold my smaller articles of jewelry on my bedside table when they’re not in use. My first objective was to find a good location to use as a topographical base of the project. Because I wanted this project to be somewhat bowl-like and hold small objects, I was looking at lake...
