Luke Schiesser Proposal: Mixed Techniques

Proposal Statement:

My hobby station is a perpetual mess, so I want to make a setup to organize the chaos. This will include a paint rack, a tool storage, a brush holder, a work tray, and bins and drawers for miscellanious supplies.

I'm drawing inspiration from examples online such as these

I asked my classmates for feedback:

"That'd be sick as hell" -Shumulya

Ryan advised that I use the 1/4 in. plywood as it is the most sturdy material that we can lasercut.

Rough Game Plays:

For precision and ease of manufacture, I plan to lasercut the majority of this project. I would like the pieces to be seperate (or at least detachable) to allow me to customise my setup and adjust to future workspaces as needed.

My rough ideas for the sections are:

  • Paint rack
  • Brush holder
  • Tool organizer (stretch goal)
  • Work tray (stretch goal)
I want to at least make the paint rack and brush holder,
I already have an airbrush and painting station, so these parts will go alongside it. Making them seperately would allow me to transport them easily as well.

For the paint rack, I want to be able to store a large number of bottles of various sizes. Different paints come in different containers, and I want to be able to store all of them in an upright position to preserve their quality.
Thus, I will need a paint rack with holes of various shapes and sizes to accommodate all the paints I have, plus more space to hold future paints I may get. This might work best as a modular design that can be repeated if I need to expand the amount of holding space.

The brush holder should be fairly simple: essentially a box with holes in the lid and a corresponding grid on the bottom to keep the brushes upright. I want to 3D-print this part because the brushes might be slightly wet when I store them, and I don't want the plywood to be affected.
A simple design I might draw inspiration from for my project

The tool rack is the least thought-out part. I don't have much in the way of a design in mind, so if I have time to make this I'll have to come up with something.
A very large design I found online

The work tray should serve as a good laptop workspace, as I often find myself working on my lap and losing pieces or tools in the chair. Similar to a TV tray, this would hold whatever project I'm currently working on and allow me some extra space to work. I may want to incorperate a plastic workmat for cutting and some dividers and holders for small parts and paint containers.
A good example of what I'd like to make

Needs:

I will need access to the Rayjet laser cutter and the 3D printers, as well as hand tools for any finishing work.

Comments

  1. Nice, well thought out project. And useful to boot. Does that elevate it's status to "Sick as Hell"? Yeah, probably. I'd consider time remaining the primary constraint and focus all energy on the paint rack and brush holder. 2 class periods will go by quickly. Tackle the two bonus builds if there's spare gas in the tank.
