Shumyla Lopez Proposal: Mixed Techniques
Shumyla Lopez Proposal: Mixed Techniques
Proposal Statement
I plan to make a pair of engraved earrings with a 3D printed or wood carved frame as a jewelry holder. For the earrings, I have a a pair of fishhooks I have not used and would like to repupose them, so I figure out whether the mental engraving tool as able to etch a design into the flat plate of the hook. I will list an example below to show a better idea of what the hooks would look like:
With the metal plates I am hoping to engrave a caliber style design.
However, the metal plates that I have from the fishooks are curved, which may be more difficult to etch on the surface. I may have to problem solve this with Josh if he is availible, but that is the idea for the earrings.
Regarding the frame, I would take an STL file of a baroque style design to have a small frame printed. However if this is not possible I will build a frame by hand, using the dremel tool to carve out the designs of the frame.
Advise:
I have spoken with my peers regarding the deisgn and have been told that I can experiment more with the design of the frame, since it may be difficult to print a standard frame in the 3D printer. It was also mentioned that it may be difficult to carve out the intricate designs of the frame if build with handtools, but it is not impossible. We also spoke about brainstorming how the earrings would be held in the frame which we understood could be done with a few horizontal poles across the frame or a style of mesh fabric that has holes big eneough to hold the earrings. I have experiemented with a few designs!
Rough Game Plan:
I plan to create a basic design of the engraving I would like etched into the earrings, which I will transfer to adobe or another illustration app to clean the design. I will then transfer the design and convert it into a png to have the metal engraver register the depth of the lines. However, prior to Fetching I have to figure out how to engrave on curved surfaces. If this is not possible, I will have to flaten the earrings, which may lead to a more inconsistent look.
For the frame, I will look for an stl file of a baroque style frame and first test whether the intricate details of the design come across despie sizing down. This will help me determine whether I need to shift my approach to hand tools and figure out how to engrave the frame myself!
Nice project idea. Seems doable. I think the biggest challenge will be the filigreed frame. you might try an AI model generator like meshy or tools within the Bambu Makerlab to 3Dify a hand drawn image. Once we have the 3D file, the CNC program is fairly straight forward. All in all, your project should be a stout challenge!
