Introducing Jay Salter

 Introduction:

A photo of me in Washington D.C.

Hi, my name is Jay Salter and I am a senior political science major at Trinity University! I am originally from Katy, Texas though my family are from England, so if you ever hear a hodgepodge of an accent that's why. I'm finishing up my final semester at Trinity, then I'm hoping to go to law school!

Interests:

Academically, I am heavily involved with a lot of the political groups on campus -- I am the current president of the political science honour society as well as working for the TU Voter Engagement Task Force and MOVETexas (basically, if there's something to do with voting or political discussion on campus you can probably find me there)! I've always loved the process of turning ideas into reality, and have had the opportunity to start a research journal on campus recently (we published our first issue in December so I'm really excited about that).

National Voter Registration Day!

I've also been really involved in research on campus, and I'm currently working with Dr. Rosa Aloisi on a project related to denial of the Bosnian Genocide -- I got to travel and present the research at the University of Sarajevo this summer which was an awesome experience!

Outside of school, I'm really interested in drawing, playing video games with my friends, and reading science fiction/fantasy (Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive is my personal favourite). I've also always been a huge fan of building Lego, which has played a big part in developing my interest in creating!

My partner and I built the Black Pearl last semester!

Expectations:

I really hope to learn how to learn how to use a lot of the tools within the Makerspace -- especially the Laser Cutter (I spent the entirety of Wednesday evening telling my friends about how cool the box we made was) and the 3D Printers. I've always had an interest in hands-on creation (and have taken a couple engineering classes before college), but as my major is primarily focused on written work I've not had the chance to explore these interests much at Trinity.

I think the hands-on environment of this class and the focus on trying new tools/ways of making will really help me balance how I handle the rest of my academics; most of my other classes require things to turn out "perfect" and don't give me the opportunity to really experiment and try new things.

I've previously done work with Adobe Illustrator as part of digital art classes in high school and through a screenprinting class at Trinity, so I'm excited to see if I can translate any of those designs into projects on the laser cutter!
