"Taste of the Space"

What is "Taste of the Space"?

Week 1

The ENGR 2192 Instructors decided to incorporate these set of activities the first week to expose students earlier to the first set of tools that would be used in the class projects. The three activities were 3D printers, laser cutters, and woodworking:

3D printers

Laser cutters

Woodworking (safety training included)

Week 2

For week 2 of class, students continued with their woodworking activity to complete their birdhouse.

End results

Here are the results from the activity. The bird house on the far left was built by Mr. Hodge. The other designs were constructed by students. Not bad for many of the student's first time.

Final reflections/overall thoughts

ENGR 2192 Students, please keep the following in mind with working on Project 1 - Building with hand tools.

During week 2 class, students reflected and discussed their thoughts regarding the woodworking exercise.
  • Scary, but fear goes away
  • Nerve racking, especially the sander (pieces flying around)
  • Hole drill nice!!!
  • Drawing by numbers?
  • Like doing something with low stress. Figure it out (low pressure introduction)
  • For the future
    • Sand better - individual piece (clean up pieces and make sure they are aligned)
    • Pre-drilling -> misaligned

Dr. Terrell and Mr. Hodge's comments

The quality of the student’s Project 1 (Building with Hand Tools) design in previous years usually resembles the current student constructed birdhouse. Now, let’s see if the lessons learned from the first two weeks makes a difference when you complete Project 1.
